Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

The typical student at MC^2 STEM High School comes from the urban Cleveland area. We are a Title I school, so all of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. School is in session year round, only having breaks for 3 weeks quarterly.

STEM education is the emphasis of our curriculum.

Our curriculum is project based. This makes the lessons taught relevant to real world applications. Sometimes, though, we lack the means to provide all of the material for those projects.

My Project

Students will learn how to make physical computing projects a reality by allowing them to become makers. In my computer programming class, I would like to see what problems students can solve with a Raspberry Pi and an Explorer Hat, or a Sense Hat. These extra hats allow the Raspberry Pi to control motors, servos, and sensor data. The first step in our project is to identify a problem to solve. Then, the students will model what they want to build in order to solve this problem. Lastly, students will build their idea using a Raspberry Pi and a hat to show proof of concept.

We already have plenty of Raspberry Pi single board computers, but we don't have enough of the essential extras that can make these projects come to life.

These concepts the students learn will directly apply to their other classes, and will carry them on through life as a physical computational thinker.
