STEM Materials Here, STEM Materials There, STEM Materials Everywhere!

My Students

My students are four olds, and for many this will be their first year attending elementary school. It will also be my first year teaching this position at this school. I am extremely excited about this opportunity, just like many of my students are eagerly waiting for the first day of school.

My students are a diverse group of learners, excited about the opportunity to learn through hands-on-activities and experiences.

It is so rewarding each day to observe each child make discoveries about the world around them, and watch them grow and learn each day. In addition it is also amazing what they teach each other in the classroom, and how much they enjoying working together in centers.

My school serves K-5th grade inner city students. Teachers collaborate to effectively plan instruction. It has multiple classrooms at each grade that are focused on incorporating STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) into the curriculum, and STEAM is also the focus of specialist teachers. This expose will help to create life long learners inside and outside the classroom.

My Project

My students need STEM materials for all of the areas of the classroom. These materials will allow children to act as engineers as they build structures in the block area or using small building tools at a table. They can use the images of photos of houses to help them create their own houses. They will also get to share with the class over the year how they create different structures using various materials.

Students will act like scientists as they explore the materials at the water table and discuss their observations.

They will continue to share what they learned during the class meeting, and build on ideas. Students will also explore animals as they observe photos of different animals on the science viewers. Students will draw pictures of the animals they see using art materials in the art center. In the math center, they will play the seahorse game and practice counting to twenty.

The giant Rekenrek will be used to model counting and how students should use the individual Rekekreks we already have in the classroom. All of these supplies will make science, technology, engineering, and math come alive for students in various ways over the school year.
