Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is in an urban district. I have two half-day integrated classrooms, meaning I have students with and without disabilities. I have twenty-nine students, who range from ages three to five, and have a variety of cognitive, physical, and sensory needs.
I hope to strengthen my student's cognitive and fine motor needs through the use of STEM materials.
Many of my children receive occupational therapy services for fine motor support. Engineering materials will help to strengthen the muscles in their hands. Science and math materials will help build their cognition through problem solving, exploration through play, and increase their ability to complete a task.
My Project
The materials I have chosen will benefit my students learning of STEM concepts, specifically science, math and engineering. The engineering kits will encourage students to plan, problem solve, demonstrate understanding of spatial awareness, and strengthen their fine motor skills. The magnetic gears will teach basic science skills as well as aid in the development of cause and effect. The counting tray and manipulatives will support their learning of counting, numbers, and quantity.
Creating a STEM center will encourage curiosity and problem solving, as well as further develop language skills, fine motor skills, and give my students an understanding of how the materials in their world work.
The mobile STEM station will allow all of the materials to be kept in one place, in a quiet, distraction free area to allow focus and increased attention.
