This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a special education teacher, working in the same school district for thirteen years now. The district I work for is a low-income, high-poverty neighborhood in Texas, a Title I-funded school in San Antonio.

Many of the students I work with qualify for special education services for various reasons.

My students all have different learning styles. They come in from the general education classroom to receive small group instruction in a small, less distracting environment.

My goal is to provide them with every opportunity available to become academically successful.

My Project

This project will allow our classroom to integrate STEM activity into cultural lessons of the Year of the Tiger. This is an ideal opportunity to introduce other cultures for my students to experience besides their own.

Cultural awareness helps us break down cultural barriers, build cultural bridges, and learn how to love, and appreciate those different from us.

We will read various books such as The 12 Days of Lunar New Year, Bringing In the New Year, and The Year of the Tiger: Tales from the Chinese Zodiac. The students will also be able to sample different types of sweet treats such as lucky candy and fortune cookies. We will be able to close out the lesson with a hands-on activity in building a LEGO Majestic Tiger.
