I teach children with varying exceptionalities, such as specific learning disabilities, autism, vision impairment, and cerebral palsy. My students are at least two grade levels behind their same age peers. We are a Title I school which means many of the children come from impoverished backgrounds. They have parents that are absentee, intellectually disabled, or not well educated. Many students are part of the Hunger Project which helps feed them on weekends.
In my room, the students are able to work on their level and at the pace they need.
We are trying to ensure that they get the most out of their education.
My Project
My young special needs students benefit from hands-on experiences.
STEM kits will help my students understand the abstract concepts of math and science through exploration.
The students will use the Magnet kit to experiment on many surrounding materials to test for magnetism. They will test buoyancy with the Sink or Swim kit. They will learn about motion with small cars. Students will use their own critical thinking skills to solve problems, which is especially important for students with special needs, who sometimes lack the ability to think abstractly. Exploring science through experimentation helps children remember important concepts they will revisit throughout their academic careers.
