Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The essence of science is to learn by doing. I do my best to make sure every unit I teach has a project to build or dissect. Putting actual scientific equipment into the hands of a child sparks imagination and wonder. I want to promote that with my students.
My school is in a rural environment in the middle of California.
My students are generally very poor and rarely leave their small town for even short trips. As a result, they are not exposed to much outside of their small community. Many hunger for new ideas and want to use their imaginations for more than just an escape from reality.
My Project
My classroom is in need of a few items to round out the technology we already have. We need more Hatchbox ABS plastic filament for our 3D printer so we can complete more projects. We have been using the printer for studying design and recycling/upcycling possibilities in Environmental Science. We also need a 3D Doodler pen for creating more versatile designs and fixing errors from our larger printer. Finally, we need a new Redpawz drone that uses immersive visual stimulus to replace our older drone that no longer functions.
These technologies teach cutting edge STEM experiences to students that would likely never have a chance to use them.
Unfortunately, keeping resources stocked is not always easy or cheap. This will allow us to get that much further into new technology.
