My students come to the school Library Media Center and Maker Space once a week. They are very appreciative of opportunities to read, tinker, build, and express their creativity.
I have curious, caring, and cooperative students who are hungry for hands-on opportunities to read, create, and make the world a better place.
My students come from many different countries from around the world and dozens of home languages are spoken. They are very caring about each other and their environment.
My Project
In our library maker space, students will have opportunities to learn about and build bridge structures with a wide variety of materials while practicing the engineering design process. After reading the story of how P.T. Barnum paraded elephants across the new Brooklyn Bridge to prove its strength in "Twenty One Elephants," students will be challenged to use materials such as cups, popsicle sticks, toothpicks, and straws to build bridges that can hold 21 elephant counters. Older students will also be challenged to learn about and build different kinds of bridges with K'Nex and Engino bridge building sets. Living on an island in a bay, students will also have opportunities to investigate the many bridges around them, giving them a better sense of place and understanding how humans have modified their environment.
This year I will focus on building bridges - both literal and figurative - in the library media center.
Reading literature has been shown to improve empathy. "Strictly No Elephants" and "I'm Like You, You're Like Me" are two additions to our growing library collection of books that help us build bridges of empathy and understanding.
