STEM for Special Needs Success

My students need a year's worth of science experiment materials for motivation/rewards for not giving up and putting forth their best effort in spite of their disabilities. STEM activities are dual purpose and perfect for this!

My Students

My students range in age from 5 to 12, each with varying degrees of disabilities. They are masters of perseverance, sometimes spending more than five minutes to decode one- three syllable word when other students without disabilities give up after 5 seconds. They are my rock stars who always shoot for growth in all assessments they are required to take- and usually make tons of progress. My kids, Autistic, Dyslexic, Visually Impaired, and those having Specific Learning Disabilities, care more about others than themselves. I'd like to be able to reward their perseverance with what they love: science experiments.

My Project

I teach elementary students with disabilities to read. It is a daily struggle, a tedious process that sometimes results in frustration and fear of failure. I use STEM activities to combat negativity and motivate my students about every other week after progress monitoring. In spite of their disabilities, my students give it their all and show tremendous academic and personal growth during the year.

STEM activities are dual purpose: Not only are they perfect for learning, they are also the BEST motivators for my students.

While my students may think they are just growing crystals or making chemicals react, they will actually be growing confidence and making deep connections that will last a lifetime.
