My Project

My STEM class needs a drone for the upcoming unit. This project supports an upcoming unit in our STEM pathway focused on engineering, aerodynamics, and weather science. Students will engage in experiential learning using a drone as a real-world engineering tool to explore how air, motion, forces, and weather conditions impact flight. By integrating hands-on activities and inquiry-based investigations, students will deepen their understanding of scientific concepts while developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

The requested drone will allow students to safely observe, test, and analyze principles of flight in an authentic and engaging way that mirrors real-world engineering and aviation applications.

Learning Focus and Instructional Approach

This unit emphasizes hands-on learning, project-based learning, experiential learning, and real-world applications. Instruction is designed to be student-centered, interactive, and inquiry-driven.

Key instructional strategies include:

Hands-On Activities: Students actively operate, observe, and collect data from drone flights.

Project-Based Learning: Student teams will plan and execute flight challenges, testing how design and environmental variables affect performance.

Inquiry-Based Learning: Students will generate questions, make predictions, and analyze outcomes related to airflow, lift, drag, thrust, and gravity.

Experiments and Labs: Learners will conduct controlled flight tests and record data on speed, stability, height, and distance.

Use of the Drone in Instruction

The drone will serve as the central tool for this unit, allowing students to:

Explore aerodynamics and the forces of flight (lift, thrust, drag, and gravity)

Investigate how airflow and air pressure influence movement and stability

Observe the impact of weather elements such as wind, temperature, and air density on flight

Understand how engineers design and adjust flight systems for different conditions

Students will also connect drone mechanics to engineering concepts such as balance, motor function, sensors, and control systems.
