My Students

I am teaching a brilliant, diverse, sweet, and curious group of first graders this year in San Diego! They show up to class every day ready to tackle this brave new digital world we are working through together. I am already so impressed with how they have adapted to online meetings, using new apps and tech, and patiently participated during our online meetings. They have made online meetings with 26 six year olds a joy!

At our school, you can hear Spanish in the hallways, you can walk through our Japanese-inspired friendship garden, and most of all, you can see a community from all over the world coming together to laugh and learn.

Many of our students are from military families, or are new to the neighborhood, and our school is an integral part of welcoming them into their new community. Our school is young, and we have been working to grow our mission of inclusion and a global perspective. We do so by celebrating our namesake Saburo Muraoka, a Japanese American from our community, integrating Japanese aspects into our school, and providing strong dual immersion Spanish programs for K-4th grade.

My Project

Every student learns in a different way; some are kinetic, tactile, visual, or auditory. With STEM activities, children are invited to use whatever learning type they prefer to investigate and imagine. However, these activities tend to require specific tools, and with your donation my students can use fun to practice key developmental processes such as teamwork, hand eye coordination, perseverance, and critical thinking.

Additionally, first grade is when students develop either a strong love of reading, or not.

I aspire to promote a text-rich environment, and in doing so I am passionate about providing diverse, forward-thinking, and fun collection of books for students to choose from. Our school does not have a library, so it has fallen on me to provide all books for my students, and I am so excited at the prospect of filling our classroom library with these strong wonderful stories from all over the world.
