In fact, I'm seeing hands go up to write on the board, from students who struggled with participation in the past!\r\n\r\n In science, we've used it to watch engaging videos and annotate passages about topics like earthquakes, helping students visualize and understand complex ideas. These books have introduced my 6th graders to essential skills such as analyzing characters' perspectives, understanding historical and cultural contexts, and identifying themes like resilience, family, and hope. Through guided reading and thought-provoking discussions, my students are learning how to connect the characters' experiences to real-world issues, fostering critical thinking and empathy.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading looks vibrant and engaging. Students work in small groups to discuss key passages, share insights during whole-class discussions, and even write journal entries from the perspectives of the characters. They've been inspired to read more books by Alan Gratz, exploring other historical events and the lives of characters facing extraordinary challenges. This enthusiasm has created a ripple effect, with students eagerly recommending books to one another and extending their learning beyond the classroom.\r\n\r\nOne student, Cassie, who is usually quiet, has become a thoughtful leader in our discussions, often bringing up nuanced points about the characters' choices. Another student, Luke, has channeled his creativity into creating a timeline of the characters' journeys, helping his peers visualize the story. Zion, a strong-willed and unique student, has shown incredible empathy, often sharing how the book relates to challenges people face today. Seeing their growth as readers, thinkers, and compassionate individuals has been truly inspiring.\r\n\r\nThis project has not only enhanced their literacy skills but also helped them develop a deeper understanding of the world and their place in it.
