My Students

Our school serves 850 elementary students from diverse backgrounds in South Jordan, Utah.

Each of these K-6th grade students come to our newly established STEM Makerspace once a week where they get hands to learn about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.

Given tools and the opportunity to create and innovate, my students inspire me every day as they collaborate and think outside the box to design solutions to real world problems.

My Project

We are carefully building our STEM Makerspace with a library of tools to teach students to be not only consumers of technology, but creators of technology.

Through the Covid-19 pandemic, technology has become our new normal: As part of the USBE Covid Relief Program, help me purchase iPads for our Makerspace that will be paired with robots to teach the new Utah Computer Science Standards.

These robotics activities will guide students in becoming computational thinkers. Students will use computational thinking to code a robot to do things such navigate a maze, knock down a set of bowling pins, or even retell a story they're studying in language arts. Students will use trial and error until they've created a successful algorithm to complete the task at hand. Although computational thinking is essential to the development of computer applications, it also teaches problem solving skills that can be used across all disciplines: math, science, the humanities, and social skills.

While we need students who are tech savvy enough to learn across multiple modalities through the pandemic, our goal is more broad than simply increasing computing skills. Computational thinkers are problem solvers. Problem solvers persevere and are resilient. This is the kind of strength that will empower our students to face their challenges, close the learning gaps of the pandemic, and emerge even stronger because of it.
