This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the joy of making something for the first time? Seeing something come to life that you made and put a piece your heart and soul into is an experience every young person should have. I see the happiness on students faces as they create STEM projects and learn about engineering and computer science. However, supplies and tools to build and create are hard to come by in an urban low income, high poverty school like mine. I often do not have enough tools and equipment and this limits students in their projects.

My students problem solve and learn important computer science skills such as coding when they make this project.

They love to build, design, and construct and coding allows them to make their creations move and come to life. By combining building hands-on projects with computer science, my students learn necessary critical thinking skills as they explore ways to solve real life problems. My students care about the world around them and want to create ways to help people and our planet. Integrating STEM projects with coding allows my students to become an important part of solutions for our world.

My Project

These materials will allow my students to make their own creative projects using critical thinking skills. My students will be able to design engineering projects that address real-world problems and code them using a computer. Students will be able to develop energy saving prototypes of small robots and also a project to create technology to help someone with cerebral palsy navigate school life. By collaborating and using the engineering design method to learn about applied mechanics they will explore their ideas. These ideas will come to life with coding and movement using computer science skills. Students will iterate their designs using mathematics and science to collect data.

This STEM project will engage my students as they use critical thinking to solve problems and learn life skills.

Engaging students to think and work through obstacles prepares them for jobs and college. Firsthand working on problems they see in the world around them gives them confidence that they can make a difference.
