My 6th grade students from Westwood, NJ are currently enrolled in my Language Arts resource room. Each of these students has an IEP specific to their learning disability. They are all eager to learn and explore their love for reading! Each day, we share stories about what we've read, books we recommend, and books we want to read in the future! However, we share a room (and budget) with six other teachers so it is difficult to create an appealing, effective classroom environment. Regardless, we make the best of the situation and carry on!
My Project
With more options for flexible seating and classroom organization, students will have more opportunities to be accountable and make choices that work best for them. During independent work times, students are able to move about the classroom and choose a space that feels comfortable for them. I have noticed a huge difference in attention and behavior when flexible seating is made available to students.
As a special education teacher, I know how important it is for students to have a voice and take ownership of their learning.
With flexible seating options, I have noticed a huge decrease in negative, attention-seeking behaviors and work avoidance. When students feel safe, organized, and appreciated, they simply thrive!
The products that I have chosen will give my students additional seating options and opportunities to keep their work organized. In particular, the balance ball chair is a fantastic resource for students, especially those with ADD and ADHD. Tools like this in the classroom can also be used to promote health and wellness! The resistance bands can also provide an outlet for my students to expend their energy in a safe, effective way! The organizational supplies, including the notebooks and hanging file chart, provide organizational assistance for everyone in the classroom including myself.
