Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Just because our students' background experiences may be limited, our classroom experiences should be limitless!
Our TK students are beautifully diverse, both ethnically, socio-economically, and in life experiences.
We are the only TK class at our Title I school (which means the majority of our school population qualifies for free or reduced rate lunch). For many of our TK students, this year is their very first school experience as many have not been able to take advantage of a preschool program.
My Project
The highlight of my life science program has been raising steelhead trout from the egg stage to the fry stage. This year our 18 year old tank finally started leaking. Fortunately, with a lot of towels and me coming in on the weekends, we had a nearly 100% success rate of viable fry to release back into their home river. Consequently, we do need a new tank.
With your help, next year's new group of steelhead scientists will study and experience firsthand the amazing plight of our native steelhead trout.
It warms my heart when my former students come back to share with me how their study of steelhead trout and the conservation of habitats changed their way of viewing the world as adults.
