This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

First graders are a terrific age group. They love everything and are super curious to try new ideas. My students do not have a lot of the experiences my own children have had and I try to make up for this by including some of these things in school.

The hardest part of teaching is NOT telling the answers and letting children figure it out on their own.

Science projects are perfect for this! I let them try to figure out why things work or not and help them explain their reasoning.

My Project

My children love to make things and as we begin our weather unit I want them to be able to make their own equipment to practice with at home.

Their creativity will help them design these tools as they learn how they work.

I want my students to build their own wind socks, anemometers, rain gauges, and clouds in a jar as we explore the weather in our region.

They will use these materials to design their own anemometer and wind socks. They will make thunderstorms and tornadoes in a jar. As they work together they will gain a better understanding of our weather and why it changes.
