My students live in a rural area of Maine. 40% of our students qualify for free/reduced lunch. A large percentage of our families who do not qualify, still struggle to meet their families basic needs. The fact that they have a child who has special needs, makes accessing support services even more challenging.
Sensory processing, the ability to take in information from our environment and produce an appropriate response, is a major concern for our students with Autism and/or have self-regulation challenges.
They are constantly faced with overwhelming stimulation from the environment and need ways to regulate their body's response. For example, walking into a noisy space or crowded classrooms can cause an overload of the sensory system, which can impact their academic potential. The intensity with which they see the world can often cause them to shut down.
We are requesting a variety of items to assist students with appropriately processing their sensory environment. This sensory room will provide a calming and safe place for our students to regulate their sensory systems. This will allow for increased concentration in the classroom and improvement in motor planning, socialization, and communication. The item I am asking for is a sensory steamroller.
My Project
I am requesting a sensory steamroller to assist students with appropriately processing their sensory environment. We are developing a sensory room that will provide a calming and safe place for our students to regulate their sensory systems. This will allow for increased concentration in the classroom and improvement in motor planning, socialization, and communication. This is beneficial to students with a variety of needs including Autism, ADHD, ODD, and Sensory Processing Disorder. Students who do not have these diagnoses also benefited as all student enjoy a fun, welcoming environment when they need a break. Our goal with items such as a steamroller is to allow students who are sensory seekers to get the input they need within a safe environment.
