This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Almost all of my students come from low income families and live in an area where crime and drug use are common on the streets outside of school. In spite of these obstacles, many of my students come to school dedicated and wanting to learn something new.

Many of my students face multiple challenges in their personal lives that can make learning difficult during distance learning, but they still continue to grow in amazing ways.

They inspire and encourage me to learn and become a better teacher for them in many ways.

Often times, my classroom is a break from the demanding work of their other classes and a place where they feel comfortable to express themselves in a positive way. They use art as an outlet to navigate the world around them and explore difficult topics in a healthy way. In an age group where children are often exploring and learning about who they are as a person, classes where they can fell comfortable and safe are a rare necessity.

My Project

By incorporating STEAM concepts into my art curriculum, I am help my students bridge concepts between subject areas and have deeper and more meaningful connections to their work. I would like to give my students a meaningful art experience and supplies such as cardstock, pencils, and Sharpies that will not only allow them to explore the creative process, but help them to understand concepts in other areas of their education as well. By doing this, my students will be more rounded and better prepared for real world experiences when they leave my classroom. They will be able to create authentic art using science and math concepts.
