My Students

My art room is always busy- an average to 250 students per year take an art class; over half of the student body. That doesn't include the students who come in just to create art, which happens every hour of the day. Our school and community is very supportive of the arts- however my budget goes primarily to art supplies- very little left over to go towards purchasing extra equipment. I always want to give my students the best supplies that I can- make them feel like they are in fact artists. All art work is displayed in the hallways and display cases- making the student very invested in their art. However, like many schools in Iowa we are facing declining enrollment which means less funds to use for purchasing equipment. With the push for STEM or STEAM (including art) we are always looking for ways to add to our curriculum and get students excited about art and show them how they can use it after they graduate high school

My Project

One of our goals in our district and in Iowa is to be a future ready school. This project will spark critical thinking, creativity and innovation, and self-direction; as well as provide opportunities for authentic learning while incorporating STEAM into our projects. In today's digital society we need to show students how to take something digital and MAKE it.

I want to take something conceptual and see it materialize for my students!

There are so many digital and conceptual projects and ideas done in todays world and schools. Using the GlowForge to create hands-on projects will make students from small town Iowa ready for big city colleges and careers. Watching things go from computer screen to real life is what students need to succeed in today's world.
