My students are a group of 3rd and 4th graders, clustered together, learning all content areas at a STEAM magnet school in both English and Spanish. All of my learners speak English as a second language and come from a low socioeconomic background. Although they may not have much (materialistically), they prove every day that that does not define them! It is my goal to provide them with many different learning experiences and classroom materials so they can flourish and continue on their pathway toward becoming positive members of society.
Our first STEAM unit on community is a constant throughout the year, helping students understand what makes a good community and how all the aspects of a community work and rely upon each other to benefit all citizens. Community LEGOs would allow students to create a replica of their community (or invent their own) and further write about all of its working parts. LEGO base plates and a large set of pieces would allow me to build a LEGO wall for all students to use for engineering projects and testing out science concepts.
My goal is to create a LEGO wall in my soon-to-be updated (flexible) STEAM classroom where students can turn to when feeling inspired or creative.
This LEGO wall will be a perfect addition to our classroom, especially when we begin our unit on forces and motion. I know my students would enjoy testing out learned concepts through the creation of a marble maze!
