Students in my school come from a high-poverty, low-income neighborhood. They come to school every day with different needs and challenges they are facing inside and outside of our classroom. Many students receive assistance for breakfast, lunch, school supplies, and clothing, and some even take home meals for the weekend.
Despite the challenges my students face, they come to school every day eager to learn.
Beyond teaching my students what they need to know in order to be successful, my goal is to continue to foster their love of learning.
My Project
Every morning, I welcome my students into my classroom. They put backpacks away, get out folders, grab a breakfast and sit down to watch announcements. After announcements, we get out our STEAM boxes for about 15 minutes. It's our daily routine. It's what they know and what they love most about mornings.
A lot of my students have already been through many obstacles each morning before they even set foot in my classroom.
Because of this, I try to make my students' mornings as welcoming and calming as I can.
Our STEAM boxes not only allow my students to get some time to play and get accustomed to being back at school, but they also promote thinking in new ways. They are building, creating and using their imagination. They are using science, technology, engineering, art and math skills without even knowing it. With your donation, I will be able to add to my STEAM box collection and allow my students to just be kids a little bit longer.
