This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in an Early Childhood Education for the Handicapped classroom. Basically, we serve any child in Kindergarten, First or Second Grade with any handicapping condition. We have children with Autism, Epilepsy, Intellectual Disability, Down Syndrome, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
In addition to having special needs, our children attend a Title I school (most families are below poverty level) which means that many of our students lack early childhood experiences that lay the foundation for learning.
Our children can and do learn when we provide them with experiences that utilize their senses and appeal to their past limited learning opportunities.
My Project
Very young children with disabilities need multiple opportunities to engage their senses in play and learning. They need hands-on opportunities to experiment and play with materials in order to reinforce and practice math and science concepts; as well as improve their social skills.
We use manipulative materials in the classroom to give the children hands-on opportunities to create and experiment with basic construction concepts to enhance their Math and Science knowledge and skills.
With these Duplo STEAM sets, the children will learn how to read picture directions, how to sequence, request items and turns, experience cause and effect, and how to label equipment actions while engaging their senses through construction activities.
We need Duplo STEAM sets to achieve our goals of improving our children's Math and Science understanding.
