I live and teach first grade in a small rural town in Northern Californian. Most of my students have seen very little of the world. Many our students come from low income homes and we have many families who are struggling just to make ends meet.
First graders are bursting with energy and excited about learning.
As a primary education teacher I want to be able to capture that energy and make sure that every one of my students has fun while learning and that each child develops the necessary skills that will set them on the road to success where ever life takes them.
Our school has high academic standards and we work hard as a staff to enrich the lives of all our students by providing them with the education and support they need to become lifelong learners. Given our population we have to work extra hard to provide the resources necessary to make this happen.
My Project
I have specifically chosen materials that I can use to supplement the adopted curriculum toward creating a classroom strong in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math). Some of these things such as the student oil pastels and Lakeshore pencils will be used to broaden our ability to explore the visual arts.
I have been slowly adding to the manipulates and materials I have in my classroom to make learning about math and engineering more available and exciting to students.
The contraptions plank kit , magna-tiles and STEM builder tiles would help us in this area. First graders have a natural desire to build and create things. Kits and construction sets are expensive but are some of the most requested items by my students. They are constantly asking, "When do we get to of our STEAM kits again."
