Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The library is a place where students are encouraged to explore their interests, ask questions, and seek answers - and read a good book! My students range from preschool to 5th grade.

We are a Title I school: most students are low income, on free/reduced lunch, and many students are learning English as their second (if not third) language.

Despite the large age range and language fluency, each student comes to the library wanting at least one of two things: a good book to read, or help finding just the right piece of information.

My Project

The computer lab was converted into a STEAM lab this year, complete with green screen and robots! Because of a limited budget, I cannot keep up with recent publications, especially in the rapidly expanding STEAM fields.

We need new and updated titles to help support the use of our new STEAM lab!

Some titles correlate directly to equipment found in the lab, like books on robotics or sewing; some will give examples and ideas of how students can create and design their own projects and experiments; and still others will give background information on topics to help support inquiries into various fields, from solar energy to ecosystems.

The listed books will go hand in hand with the STEAM Lab, empowering students to learn: by experimentation, reading every book on sewing twice before turning on the sewing machine, or somewhere in between. The books listed are about taking things apart and putting them together again - the process, the people who have come before, and the background knowledge needed to start tinkering.
