Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are part of elective classes in 3D Design, Digital Fabrication, and Digital Photography. During our 2 and a half months together we learn to sew, create our own clothes, code, laser-cut and 3D print. In class they are able to work enthusiastically in groups or independently on their own, demonstrating to be a cohesive and engaged group. They are exceptionally talented and have wonderful ideas for their projects. I feel however that at times they are limited in scope by the materials and equipment in class.
They have amazed me day after day with their creativity, inventiveness, and energetic presence in the classroom every day.
They are playful and exuberant and are a joy to be around.
Students in the school are primarily Latinx from the Oakland area. I would like to expand the amount of tools and equipment in class, so that each student has the opportunity to engage with hands-on skills like sewing, soldering, coding, woodworking. I am asking for extra machines in order to serve more students, and make the time in class more efficient.
My Project
My students have been tremendously affected by the shelter in place order in California. Many of them miss school, their peers and their teachers, and have been helping out their families during this time. I keep regular contact with them, and wanted to help them be able to spend their free time with some activities that they normally enjoyed in my classroom. Many of them don't have the means or resources to keep up a creative or STEM interest from home, and I would like to help in part relieve their boredom.
I am trying to purchase kits for activities and projects that they normally enjoyed in my classroom.
I have put on my Wishlist items so they can embroider, paint, solder, create paper circuits. Each student will receive an item based on their interest.
