This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My third graders are curious, energetic and love to learn. Our school is in the middle of the Las Vegas valley, and, although my students come from a variety of backgrounds, most of them face socioeconomic challenges. The primary goal of our school is to educate and nurture all students to become successful and productive members of society.

My students are doing their best to focus their attention on learning, but the ongoing Covid pandemic is challenging them.

Each child in my classroom absolutely loves learning, although the method and environment in which they learn best can vary greatly. We incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met. They are truly an incredible group, and I am so lucky and thankful to have a new group of learners that are excited and ready to learn each year!

My Project

My students need to be healthy and present in the classroom in order to learn. If they become ill, they miss out on critical lessons. My students are required to wear face coverings all day long. Their parents send them to school with masks, but I have discovered that students sneeze in their face masks, spill on their masks, break ear loops and misplace their masks. They frequently need replacements during the day.

It is very difficult for them to use masks that don't fit well, or that are dirty or broken.

I want my students to know exactly where to go in the classroom to collect a fresh clean well-fitting face mask when these unfortunate mishaps occur.

Another important part of staying healthy is the ability to disinfect their little hands. The hand sanitizer provided by the school is sticky, smells medicinal and is in bulk containers so everyone has to touch the same bottle. Giving each child their own personal sanitizer will encourage them to disinfect often with less mess. If a student does have a sniffle, it's important to have a supply of soft tissues for them to use. The tissues with lotion will help keep their little noses clean and comfy.

Having a plentiful supply of face masks, personal hand sanitizers and soft tissues will allow students to maintain personal protection from the COVID virus. This will also help to avoid the unnecessary spread of infection in the classroom that could potentially lead to an enormous amount of time lost in learning.
