Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
4th grade is a wonderful age and stage. Students are eager to learn about the world around them. They are interested in everything!
Scholastic's Time For Kids mini-magazine is a kid-friendly global news resource. It provides interesting, colorful up-to-date articles on a wide range of topics from Politics to community activism to geography. I would love to provide my students access to this resource. In schools where parents can afford it, the parents usually pay for the magazine. Unfortunately, we don't have parent funds available.
My school is an urban Title 1 school. 90% of our students qualify for and receive free or reduced price lunch. However, I strongly believe poverty does not need to equate to poor education. I would like to start the new year off with a Time For Kids magazine for each student.
They will use them during class reading workshop time and for homework. We will discuss the articles and learn about what's happening in the world outside of their neighborhood. Each magazine ends with a comprehension section and a geography quiz. Also, the magazine has online links to allow them further investigation and involvement. Each issue comes with a teacher's lesson section to help the students use the information to the fullest.
In addition, I am requesting dictionaries and mini globes to be apart of this proposal. These tools would be used to enhance the students' educational experience as they read the magazine. For example, they could refer to the globes when they read an article on Iran or Africa to get a better perspective on location. The dictionaries are designed for young learners and would greatly enhance their world knowledge as they encounter unknown words and ideas. Thank you in advance for your support in bringing Time For Kids to my 2005-2006 class of 4th grade students.
