Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in my classroom involves me doing the very best I can to engage and excite my students so that they are eager to learn. Unfortunately, I am often limited by the resources of my school and am unable to do many of the things I'd like to do to help all of my learners.
The students at my school are predominantly Hispanic and African-American.
They attend a public school in South Los Angeles, an area that is known for having low performing schools and struggling students. It is a severely underfunded district in the cash-strapped state of California. Our school is looking to change that. Our goal is to close the achievement gap and create a great school in this area!
My students often come without basic supplies and it's my goal to give them a classroom where they have the best of everything and all the materials they need. My students are amazing! Despite the setbacks that many of them face, they do not ever complain or whine to me one bit about their problems. My students never complain and they always give me 110% effort and try their very best.
My Project
I would like a class set of Junior Scholastic magazines for my 6th grade Language Arts students. These magazines not only give students an opportunity to stay current on events that are relevant to them, but give them the opportunity to see expository/nonfiction writing in the classroom that is interesting and educational.
Many of my students are unaware of current news items and do not expose themselves to the news outside of school.
This gives my students the chance to not only be aware of what is going on in the world, but provides me the opportunity to enhance their Language Arts instruction with a contemporary resource.
