Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students come from diverse backgrounds. Many of my students' families migrated to our community from Spanish-speaking countries. Our school family also includes students whose ancestors are descendants of enslaved Africans. In addition, many students relocated to our area from across the United States. Many of my students come from single-parent households. The majority of my students are living in poverty. Many of my students have experienced much trauma in their short lives. My students are also trying to catch up socially and emotionally due to the negative impact Covid had on their social and emotional development. They are learning to identify their feelings and how to respond appropriately to stressors.

The calm boxes with sensory toys and fidgets, boxes, and decor will allow my students the opportunity to temporarily remove themselves from the stressor or trigger that caused them to become frustrated, angry, sad, or lonely.

My students can then use items in the calm box to help them relieve those stressors so they can return ready and focused to learn in the classroom.

My goal is to put a calm box in every classroom so that all students have an opportunity to benefit from using the calm box as a strategy to help them focus in the classroom.
