Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a middle school in a large city. We are a Title I school with 100% of our students receiving free breakfast, lunch, and supper. My students are amazing and eager learners, and I want to help them become successful, happy adults.
Most of my students are from the local area.
They have chosen to follow a marine science and environmental studies pathway for their middle school years. English is a second language for many of them. Their parents encourage them to learn as much as they can while supporting the teachers any way they can.
My Project
The toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap and socks that I am requesting will help my students meet their basic hygiene needs. Our students should focus on learning and not on if they smell bad or have dirty teeth. Our parents do the best that they can but some of our students do not have adequate personal care items provided for them at home.
Middle school can be difficult enough without standing out because of poor hygiene.
These materials will be assembled into kits and discreetly given to students. I will also have a corner where the extra hygiene supplies will be available to all students.
In addition, I have requested a few Cheez-Its for the kids to eat when they are hungry between the 8am breakfast and noon lunch. A child has difficulty focusing when they are hungry.
