Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My curious, inquisitive, and adorable pre k students are from low socio- economic backgrounds. Many are ELL learners. It is their first time in a school environment.
We learn best through purposeful play.
We try to make our pre k classroom as creative and open ended as possible. The students love learning new material and we love watching their eyes shine as they grasp new concepts. We encourage free choice centers and individual expression. With the push on testing and data and common core standards, we must also find the time and resources to be creative, use materials in innovative ways and spark their imagination. It is wonderful when the children can share that enthusiasm and what they learn at home with their parents. (example: the importance of good nutrition and eating right) Pre -k is a year for kids to explore, create, learn (as scientists and mathematicians) and become excited about life long learning.
My Project
The dramatic play center is the center of our classroom community. Hands on learning takes place there as the children prepare meals for each other, set up a restaurant or a bakery, host a birthday party or bake cookies for Santa!
Learning about good nutrition, food groups and cooking can help the students learn to work together, build language and math skills, use their imagination, all while engaging in purposeful play.
It is important to teach children about good nutrition and proper food preparation at an early age for better health and well being.
My goal throughout these lessons will be to encourage preschoolers to learn about new foods and food groups through play and literature too.
