This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My co-teacher and I do our best to meet the needs of all our students, but we need your help! KC is a community of diverse learners that celebrate and embrace each other's differences every day. Our classroom community primarily consists of children whose families are from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, and the United States. The majority of students are English Language Learners whose primary language at home is Spanish. Our school is located in Lawrence, Massachusetts, the city with the lowest per capita income in the entire state. As a result, 100% of our students qualify for the free lunch program due to the economic challenges that face their families. As you can tell, a little in our classroom will go a long way.

Despite all of the obstacles that our students overcome outside of the classroom, they come to school eager to learn and grow each day.

We are reaching out in hopes that you can help us achieve our professional goal of not allowing a zip code to define a child's future.

My Project

The materials I have requested are just a few of the things that my co-teacher and I purchase on our own before a new school year. Our school has a limited budget which covers pencils, glue sticks, and paper; however, for a successful school year we need more.

These JAM plastic folders will last the majority of the year and provide a way of communication between school and home.

The Math Manipulative Toolbox will be used to teach important early math concepts. The Lakeshore Draw & Write journals are my favorite tool to work on pre-writing skills and also allow students to cherish their memories in Kindergarten by taking them home at the end of the year. We love seeing how they have grown with these journals; they come into the school year without any letter concepts and leave writing full sentences. It is truly amazing!

These materials are inexpensive when bought individually, but add up quickly. With your help, we will be ready to go on day 1 next school year.
