Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located in the heart of vibrant south Omaha, a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood. We are diverse school with minorities constituting approximately 90% of our population. Many of our children are the first generation in their families to have the opportunity to obtain the traditional K-12 that so many of us have begun to take for granted.
With these extraordinary opportunities comes some challenges.
With nearly 90% of our students meeting federal free and reduced lunch guidelines, they often struggle to have the essential school supplies necessary to be successful.
My Project
You have to have the right tools to do a job well. This doesn't only apply to carpenters and chefs but also students. Unfortunately, most of my students struggle to bring the most basic of their "learning tools" to school. If they do bring supplies, they are frequently lost in the first few weeks because many struggle to organize and keep track of their belongings.
The goal for this project is to provide students with a pencil pouch which will remain in my classroom along with a few pencils, erasers, and a pen.
The remaining pencils will be distributed as needed.
