Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach special education at PIS in Phoenix, Arizona. My students are 4th through 6th grade students with learning disabilities and require additional support to access the general curriculum. Many are also English Language Learners and come from homes in which no English is spoken and little academic support is available. In addition to these challenges, my students live in high poverty and have very little exposure to safe enrichment activities beyond what they experience at school.

As a way to develop writing skills and build confidence, I started a school newspaper with the students in my class.

Fully run by the students, they research, interview, and photograph topics they choose. Together they write and edit each article. They have learned how to design and set up the layout, incorporating student art and design. They are learning to use Google Workspace to create their issues and, on press day each month, they take over the copy room and print issues for each of the 500 students at our school. The students proudly deliver them to each classroom and are met with cheers. This project has turned our once struggling writers into the school superstars.

My Project

Our students are special education elementary students who have started a school newspaper to develop their written and verbal communication skills. They have been writing, editing and producing our first ever school newspaper since 2019. They have covered school events, district events and even covered COVID-19 story with a special edition in February 2020 to help inform our school community.

Recorders and headsets will allow them to interview and then voice type their articles.

Reporter notebooks and badges will let them experience the excitement of being a reporter. All of these supplies will help them continue to produce the paper which has become a big hit with our entire school!
