This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have extraordinary minds, and are attempting to thrive in less than extraordinary living conditions. In this day in age where we struggle to praise diversity, we embrace our differences and celebrate all things that make us unique. We are building a community, and a family where we lift each other up, and not tear each other down. Our school has 100% free and reduced breakfasts and lunch. And when living in a little community by the Colorado River with not many resources or places to explore it is important to empower these students and all students with a good understanding of what the world has to offer.

My Project

I am asking for a class set of "Stargirl" by Jerry Spinelli. This book set would help me facilitate conversations with my students about accepting those who may be a bit different from us, and it would build social-emotional skills within the classroom through these discussions. Our district is moving to a new literature curriculum and this book would help supplement the resources the students have available to them to aid in comprehension and learning of Common Core Standards. My students have very little interaction with quality literature and the analysis of such rich text will give them a new perspective on life, people in their lives, and on literature analysis.
