Starbucks Our Classroom—Flexible Seating Options

My students need flexible seating options. Many teachers are moving toward “Starbucks-ing” their classrooms. This would include a variety of seats for students to choose that would help them be most successful in the classroom.

My Students

The children in my class all come to school with different needs! With the changing world and all the stimulation out there, students need to find ways that help them to focus on their tasks.

My class and school has a diverse demographic with diverse needs.

Many are from homes where their lives are very structured. However, many come from unstable homes where schedules may be changing constantly due to parents' work schedules and varying caregivers. In our class, we have students who are English Language Learners, students will special needs, and all of them would benefit from diverse seating options.

My Project

We are asking for flexible seating options for our students. Many teachers are moving toward “Starbucks-ing” their classrooms. This would include a variety of seats for students to choose that would help them be most successful in the classroom. Instead of spending their energy in adjusting to their assigned seat, they are able to use that energy to focus on the task at hand. Examples of these would be: scoop chairs, bouncy chairs, bands for chairs, stools, and so on.

These items are already being used in our building for students needing accommodations and have been very successful.

However, we know that flexible seating could benefit all students.

Students would have the opportunity to use these every day and would be offered to everyone in the classroom. So, all students in the grade level would have access to these learning tools and would continue throughout the years. We are anticipating the purchase of items that could last over several years.
