Starbooks: A taste of Black History Month

Help me give my students a taste of literary enrichment based on black history month.

My Project

The students in my school are mostly from rural small town backgrounds. Their exposure to black history and the important roles African American people have played in building a more culturally responsible and aware community is crucial. I have partnered with a 4th grade class in our school and those students will be sharing books with my 2nd graders. The 4th graders will be giving short video summaries of black history books that they are featuring. These summaries will be placed on a "menu" with QR code scanners for the 2nd grade students to choose from. Their selected books can then be shared by their 4th grade waiter after they "order" them from the menu. We will be including hot chocolate and muffins to snack on while sharing their books. This is sure to be a memorable way to help students realize the contributions of African American people.
