We are a Pre-K through fifth-grade elementary school in the largest public school district in Louisiana. Each grade levels include one ESL designated class and we offer Spanish Immersion in Kindergarten thru 5th grade.
The majority of our students come from economically disadvantaged homes with single parents.
We are a Title I school with approximately 90% of our students considered minorities. Our students come from many different cultural backgrounds: Hispanic, Arabic, Asian, African American and White. Also, 97% are on free or reduced-price lunch.
Unfortunately, owning a home computer is considered to be luxury item. Therefore, many of our students come to school with little to no computer skills or knowing the many educational purposes a computer can serve. Regrettably, school funds are very limited when it comes to purchasing enough computers for the students. STEM literacy is a must and these students are our future. We need to protect our future and invest in these students.
My Project
My students LOVE learning about Science. Our Space unit is easily the most highly anticipated part of the year, where we learn about the planets and universe and watch live feeds from the International Space Station and videos uploaded by NASA.
I want to provide them with a class library that will capture their imaginations and nurture a love for reading.
We have a classroom lending library which is pretty scarce on high-interest fiction. My students have limited opportunities to read quality fiction, and this project aims to change that.
We need a classroom set of Star Wars graphic novels to compliment our more "academic" non-fiction offerings while providing more opportunities to read works of fiction about space and the unknown universe. Students will be able to check these books out to read during free time in school or at home.
