My students are naturally curious 5th graders from a rural struggling community. They are hard working students that love hands-on learning projects and applying what they have learned to real life experiences. They are just as excited about their learning as other students. Unfortunately, they do not get to participate in experiences that many other children get.
We just have to be more creative in getting them experiences.
Their eagerness to learn should not be held back by things out of their control.
Understanding our solar system is always a fun unit in 5th grade science. Last year I hosted my first Star Gazing field trip at my house in the country, far from light pollution. My students and their parents loved this experience! They were able to take what they learned about the solar system in our class time to the great outdoors and apply their learning. We had several iPads with a star gazing app, glow sticks, star finders, student made telescopes and a lot of hot chocolate. But.....
To make the field trip more educational, a good quality telescope would build curiosity and encourage further learning.
A telescope would give my students another experience that most of them will not get during their childhood.
