Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title I school and many of my students come from low-income families. All of the students receive free breakfast and lunch based on their socioeconomic status, and all of my students are hungry to learn.

My students and their families are very special and face many challenges at home that make it difficult to come to school prepared to learn.

A lot of them have to work long hours after school to help their parents pay for the essentials, and some even help pay the bills, too. Giving back to the students when I can help me build a stronger relationship with them.

My Project

Many of today's students struggle with engagement at 7:30 in the morning, especially after staying up late the night before to either work or help with taking care of their younger siblings at home. These circumstances affect many of my students, who are noticeably less productive earlier in the school day.

I have a couple of Ergotron standing desks in the classroom, and the results have been incredible.

The students voluntarily use the desk when they feel tired or if they need to stay engaged. Some students need to move around a little. Feedback has been incredibly positive, with the most common response that students never intentionally fall asleep or doze off in class, and that this desk prevents those instances from occurring. I'm requesting an Adjustable Standing Desk for the students that may need to stand during class to stay focused.

Early successes have allowed for increased productivity and have led to valuable discussions about overcoming adversity and increasing productivity, two essential components of college and/or career readiness. In order to evaluate the impact of this project, I will track the use of the desks, and how it has led to improved performance and engagement in my classes.
