Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are go-getters. This year I have the privilege of teaching Honors Math 3 and Trig/Pre-Calculus students. Each of the young adults I teach in these classes have chosen to go above and beyond the bare minimum for graduation to continue to expand their mathematical minds!
These kids are college-bound which is especially impressive given that many of them will be the first in their families to pursue higher education, and many currently face economic hardship.
I want to give my students every advantage and tool possible to ensure their success and foster their love of math.
My Project
Standing desks in the classroom will meet the needs of my students better than the stationary desks I have now. Not only will having the option to stand give my more restless students an outlet for their energy, but it will also improve their overall health. Studies show the following benefits of standing desks: 1) Kids of an average weight burn between 15-25% more calories at standing desks compared to sitting; 2) Obese kids burn between 25-35% more calories; 3) Kids are more engaged and focused in a standing classroom; 4) Teachers report seeing test scores, creativity and learning improve overall; 5) Standing prevents orthopedic degradation and dysfunction including back and neck pain, repetitive stress injuries, pelvic floor dysfunction, and knee and hip disorders."
Standing desks will allow for greater flexibility in classroom arrangement to allow student collaboration.
Being able to easily reorganize the design of our seating (standing) arrangements will allow my students and I to quickly transition between small group and whole group activities, will encourage students to work together when appropriate, and, according to a study published by the academic journal Pediatric, will contribute to improved interpersonal skills. Standing desks will go a long way to shifting the focus in my classroom from teacher-centered to student-centered.
