Many of my high school students admitted that the last book they read completely of their own free will was in 3rd grade. Others admitted the only book that they read within the last year was \"The Outsiders\" in their 8th grade English class. While the elementary days of reading logs may end we need every resource available to encourage our high school students to read. Every Friday in my classroom students are tasked with choosing a book and reading for twenty minutes. In the beginning we struggled to get students focused for five and now we breeze through the twenty minutes like it is nothing. \r\n\r\nOur library at school has a limited number of options and my own library contains some options but is still limited. Your donations made it possible for me to grow my classroom library which in itself is an amazing feat. Now instead of aimlessly choosing something dusty off of the shelf students are truly trying to find novels that they enjoy. \r\n\r\nWhat I hope donors and families understand is that reading is a critical skill and no matter how the world evolves or changes we will always need people who love to read. It gave them a sense of pride and identity, and it was exciting to see them represent our program in such a fun and creative way.\r\n\r\nWhile the T-shirt maker arrived a bit too late for us to use this school year, we are incredibly excited about the opportunities it will bring next year. This year, many of our AVID students were unable to purchase shirts due to the high cost. On our AVID trips, we often saw other schools proudly wearing their AVID T-shirts, and our students noticed. While it's still too early to see the full impact of your donation, there is already a lot of excitement on campus about the iPad incentive for tutoring. We just started tutoring this week, and the contest will run through the end of May. In my four years of running tutoring, I have never seen this much interest—students are already asking questions and showing enthusiasm like never before.\r\n\r\nTo make the contest even more inclusive, Northview has decided to host a pizza party during lunch in the library, where we will raffle off nine additional prizes to the top ten students who attend tutoring the most. This way, students who finish in second or third place won't feel left out, and everyone has a chance to celebrate their hard work.\r\n\r\nI cannot express how much this means to us. We've tried many different incentives in the past but struggled to bring in students consistently. Thanks to your generosity, I truly believe engagement will grow this year.
