This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As our school Book Club nears completing our 20th consecutive year, the monthly conversations continue to attract a standing-room-only crowd.

The teen students we serve at my school are diverse in every way: gender, race, religion, country of origin, economic circumstance, etc.

What unifies this book group is the simple pleasure of reading and discussion. For 20 years, our group has met faithfully, month after month, to share our views (sometimes very different views!) about great books. The success of this project would be remarkable anywhere, but especially at a diverse urban school like ours. The bonus is that after each meeting, that month's book receives a ton of "buzz" around school, and the library is flooded with requests from eager readers. The news of a good book is always contagious!

This is a popular club at our school. Students must apply to participate, and we have a waiting list. We try to bring in at least one author each year to discuss inspiration, craft, revision, and publishing with the students. This year, we brought in eight authors!

Our titles for next year include an award-winning mystery, a beloved fantasy novel, and a best-selling romance title, and they tackle many contemporary issues teens care about. The books we request for this project are high-interest books that are likely to spark great discussions. Thank you for considering a donation to our group.
