The teenagers who participate in this club are diverse in just about every way--race, religion, economic circumstances, country of origin, even GPA. What unifies this group is a passionate commitment to reading for fun, as well as an interest in academic, college-level research. For more than a decade, we have met faithfully, month by month, to discuss each selection. Some books are grouped around a theme, and others are chosen just for fun. The success of this project would be remarkable anywhere, but especially at a high-poverty urban school like ours. The added bonus is that after each meeting, that month's book receives a ton of "buzz" around school, and the library is flooded with requests from many more requests. The news of a good book is always contagious!
