The community that our school is located in is very close but suffers from high poverty and a high crime rate.
Students at our school are wonderful and have high goals, but they lack experiences and skills that many of their peers that don't live in poverty have.
Some of our classes have more than 50% of the students that are currently English language learners. We are always looking for ways to give our students a competitive edge to compete with the students not living in poverty.
For many of our students, we spend more time with them than their families because our families are forced to work 2nd and 3rd shifts to provide for their family. This leads to a lot of unsupervised time or a lot of siblings raising siblings. Our students lack many of the social-emotional skills that are expected in the real world. They face many challenges every day that are beyond the understanding of most people outside of an urban setting with high poverty.
My Project
During the summer of 2016, I purchased 4 ball chairs, 4 traditional stools, 4 beach chairs and 4 camp chairs and took a leap of faith into flexible seating. Now, I need your help to provide additional seating options since our class size has increase so much. I am requesting for standing stools this time along with one more standing desk. .
You will help add flexible seating options to our classroom to help the space continue to grow and be a student centered learning space.
My students spend most of their school day sitting in desks and it shows. They have more energy than they know what to do with or they fall asleep. The flexible seating I have provided keeps them actively engaged all period.
When the 2016 school year began, students were shocked when they entered the class room. It looked so different from what they were used to.
They filled all the traditional seats first and then stood around the room lost until I directed them to sit down in the other options. Within a week they had all found options that worked best for them, switching around depending on their needs each day. They were more focused and excited to come to class each day.
Students from other rooms tried to sneak in and sit in the different options. Flexible seating was working and now it is time to take it to the next level with your help.
