Standing for Understanding!

Help me give my students an opportunity to experience diverse seating options as they navigate the rigors of my CBG classroom. These standing tables help students get the wiggles out and stay focused on doing hard things!

My Project

My classroom is a band of identified CBG (Center Based Gifted) students who want to learn about the world around them in creative and unique ways. Even though these students are "gifted", the day can be a grind for anyone when sitting in a seat the entire day. I strive to construct a unique space that keeps students engaged and motivated. Our goal is to earn a reputation as a CBG program that pushes students to succeed through creativity and humility. In my unique classroom, students are pushed to excel and thrive no matter what challenges are thrown at them. We are in a population with a wide range of backgrounds, proud heritage, and tremendous potential. We are a Title I school which allows for increased Federal Funding for our impoverished students.

By using these Standing Tables, my classroom seeks to be more of a Club House than just another workspace.

I prefer using tables rather than individual desks because the tables afford more opportunity for group collaboration, projects, and planning. Almost everyday my students write directly write on the tabletops with dry-erase markers and they are allowed to stand, sit, or roam to find the spot that best fits their needs. Standing desks also afford a better view of the front of the classroom when they are placed in the back as a kind of "balcony area", which keeps students more vested in lessons. Lastly, the standing desks afford individual students who find sitting still difficult an opportunity to maintain focus and prevent distractions for themselves and their peers.
