Standing Desks

Help me give my students an additional opportunity to learn in different ways. These standing desks will allow students who tend to move and wiggle a separate way to interact with their desk.

My Project

Sixth grade students are a real special bunch. They are going through their awkward phase of growing into and through adolescence. I love teaching this age range because the students secretly love my goody and sometimes cringy personality.

This project is all about providing the opportunity for students to work at a standing desk and then reaping the benefits that this opportunity can provide.

Some students have a difficult time sitting for long periods. A standing desk is a great way for them to move around while still engaging with certain types of classroom activities.

Imagine coming into a sixth grade classroom and seeing five or six tables of four to five students. Each group of tables is put together and students are discussing a topic, creating poster, and helping each other engage with a specific skill. Two or three of those tables have one of those desks set up at a height where the student is able to stand instead of sit. The students at those desks seem to be moving a lot more than the others. They wiggle, sway, fidget, and bounce while engaging with the activity. Their movement is not interrupting or bothering the other students in their group. Now imagine they do not have that standing desk and are sitting instead. They still move about. How might that movement affect the others?

I hope you consider donating to this project so that students who have a need to move are better equipped to do so while staying focused and engaged with regular class activities.
