My students need standing desks so that they can work in a way that is safe and comfortable. Standing desks also have many health benefits!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is full of bright and curious students of very diverse backgrounds. I teach 2nd grade in an inclusion classroom; this means that I have several students who qualify for special education working alongside general education students. Over 70% of students in our district are economically disadvantaged. Our goal is to prepare our students for success in their future--whether it's in college or out in the work force. Our school focuses on the well being of the whole child. We do our best to ensure that students are healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged.
My Project
Many students (and adults) struggle to sit still in a standard desk for hours at a time. I have students who tell me regularly that they feel they can focus better when they are standing. I allow students to stand in my current classroom, however, I do not have a comfortable work space that can accommodate standing.
Studies suggest that sitting for prolonged periods of time (as we do in standard desks) leads to poor posture, back pain, increased fatigue, has a negative impact on the cardiovascular system, and may limit the ability of some students to focus.
Standing desks would provide a space where students can better focus and improve their health at the same time.
