Many students (and adults) struggle to sit still in a standard desk for hours at a time. I have students who tell me regularly that they feel they can focus better when they are standing. I allow students to stand in my current classroom, however, I do not have a comfortable work space that can accommodate standing. Studies suggest that sitting for prolonged periods of time (as we do in standard desks) leads to poor posture, back pain, increased fatigue, has a negative impact on the cardiovascular system, and may limit the ability of some students to focus. Standing desks would provide a space where students can better focus and improve their health at the same time.
