My students are a diverse mix of energetic, intelligent, and curious 9 and 10-year-olds who need resources to truly excel! My school is an urban, high-poverty school that strives to do what's best for the kids, but we often don't have the budget for the "extras" (basic supplies, books, technology, field trips, etc.) that can make a significant positive impact on student learning and growth. Many of my students come from homes where finances are very tight. Some have families that struggle to put food on the table. In addition, most of my students are in the process of learning English as a second language (ESL). Despite these challenges, they thrive when presented with the opportunity to do so.
My classroom motto is BAT - Be Awesome Today!
As their teacher I will do everything in my power to support their awesomeness!
My Project
I have started to implement flexible seating in the classroom and my students absolutely love having a choice of where to work on their assignments. This year I am hoping to add more flexible seating options - one of them being stand-up desks.
Instead of always hearing the words, "Sit down at your desk" in school, how would you have liked to hear the words, "Choose where you'll be most effective today"?
That is exactly the kind of classroom that I am striving to create. This stand up desk is equipped with a book bin for storing supplies and a swing bar at the bottom for foot movement. Students who learn best through kinaesthetic learning and need to be moving in order to absorb what is being taught, will be able to have access to and utilize this desk on a daily basis. This stand up desk will allow students to be more mobile, to be able to fidget, to to be able to complete assignments in the way that works for them!
